EVELYN MAYUGA, Co-founding Member and CMMS Secretary

Secretary & Treasurer, Lynearl Investments Ltd.

“The call to reach out to the poor has always been in our life plan. After taking an early retirement from my practice in Occupational Therapy, I kept myself busy with various community projects. In early 2010, Dr. Dan Vargas approached us to organize a medical mission to serve the poor in third world countries. My husband and I saw this as the opportunity to really share the blessings we have been given in life. The work involved in achieving our objectives is difficult because we cannot do it alone. We are so fortunate that we found a lot of dedicated volunteers who have the same goal of “serving” and really do the work they have been assigned to do from their hearts. Our work in the CMMS is enormous, from the planning and organizing of the mission to doing fundraising events so that we can carry on and support our missions. However, no matter how big the work is, every volunteer contributes his unique skill to make the work seem small. And like what our tagline says, “Together, we bring hope for better health!”

“I take every opportunity I am given to help the less fortunate. We are certainly not rich, but we have enough to share to those who are in dire need. Through my professional practice in Architecture, I have been to different parts of the world, and poverty is always existent. There has always been the desire for us to reach out directly and help alleviate the life of the poor. With the founding of the Canadian Medical Mission Society, we have been given that opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many people. Dedicating a part of one’s life to the service of the poor is a legacy that my wife and I would like to leave our two children.”

ANTONIA VARGAS, Co-founding Member

Registered Nurse

Antonia who is endearingly known to her friends as Toni is a nurse who has shifted her training to audiology since her husband Dr. Vargas is an ENT specialist. She assists Dan in his clinic. Even before the inception of the Canadian Medical Mission Society, Toni has been joining Dan in his medical missions. Her professional responsibility during missions is devoted solely to testing and assessment of patients with hearing impairment. “My heart goes out to children from poor families who are born with profound hearing deficiency, as they will never have a chance to have a proper education and face a bleak future in our “hearing world”. It is only through medical missions like ours that offers audiology services where they will have an opportunity to hear.”
